Article 7: Signs of Sun Damage You Might Be Ignoring
Sun damage doesn't always look like a sunburn. Often, it shows up in subtle ways that are easy to dismiss as "just aging" or "just how my skin is."
1. Fine lines that appeared earlier than expected. UVA rays are a leading cause of premature fine lines and loss of elasticity — often years before genetics alone would explain it.
2. Uneven skin tone or dark spots. Sun exposure triggers excess melanin production, which can show up as patches of discoloration, especially on the cheeks, forehead, and back of the hands.
3. Rough or leathery texture. Skin that feels less smooth than it used to, particularly on frequently exposed areas, is a common early sign of cumulative UV exposure.
4. Visible small blood vessels. Sun exposure can weaken capillary walls over time, sometimes leading to visible redness or small vessels near the skin's surface.
5. Slower recovery from minor skin issues. Sun-damaged skin often has a compromised barrier, meaning things like dryness, irritation, and breakouts take longer to heal.
The takeaway: These signs build up slowly — which is exactly why daily protection matters more than occasional protection. The best time to prevent sun damage was years ago. The second-best time is today.
